Week 10

Incorporating Room 2: Relaxing Space

For this room, I conceptualised this room where people could relax in this web garden. It's conceptualised as a simple breathing sphere, with an animation that expands and contracts.

Upon further feedback from users, someone mentioned that instead of using just the word "Breathe", I could make it much more specific and instructional like 'Inhale' and 'Exhale'. This is a good suggestion as it would be more specific and clear to the user.

Interview with Pauline Esguerra: Slow Technology

A Success! It fetched data from different channels

I had a chance to interview Pauline Esguerra through e-mail, a designer currently based in New York. She created Soft.Space, a web-based interactive internet art that explores the concept of slow technology. as part of her graduation BA project, and I have briefly mentioned her for her help in Week 08. This time, I reached out to her again, as I wanted to incorporate her into a zine that I intend to make. Moreover, I was generally really intrigued and interested in her thesis topic, especially when I am also unearthing the same kind of question like her. I feel like her website Soft.Space as an output was really clear in its intention and narrative, and I wanted to know more about her process and how she came up with the framework Slow Technology. As compared to her project, I feel like my project lacked that clarity and intention in its narrative. Slow Technology was something I didn't uncover in my dissertation research, although I was already following the principles of it, without putting a name to it.

The screenshot above is one part of the interview that I had with her, and it made me really excited and even more driven to be grounded in my topic and concept. Especially when she mentioned:

"While technical skill is important to learn in school, most of what will challenge you in the "real world" (as they say) is your ability to come up with conceptually rich ideas"

Is this true for Singapore design industry too? I haven't stepped into the industry yet, but I feel like the main importance is still placed on technical skills and the ability to deliver visually appealing outcomes under high pressure though. At least this is what I feel. I know for sure the technical skills for me can be improved on, for eg, typography, layout, print etc.
