Week 7

Presentation Preparation

For this week, we had to prepare for a presentation of everything we have experimented and worked on to end off term one. To start off my making process, I thought of trying to code something on p5js first. I realised I’ve truly forgotten this language when I couldn’t decipher the difference between the ID and CLASS attribute. So I started relearning from scratch. A great source of material I used are tutorials from Khan Academy.

  • Surveillance Watching every move on the internet

I’ve realised whenever I try to make generative art is that it always ends up relatively illustrative. However, observing other generative artworks, it tends to be more intricate with a bit of randomness in it, which I feel my generative coding outcomes aren’t able to achieve. I’m thinking if I want my outcomes to be more playful and experimental, rather than outcomes being illustrative/ predictable, it can be more abstract and random.

Mini Guest Book Poetry

Being inspired by the cursor party by Matt Webb, I tried to treat the internet as a place where people can meet and generate something out of it. To start off, I got ChatGPT to imagine a bunch of words from a conversation between adults aged 18-30 years old. I then created sticky notes, styling them, and generating them at random places. I also include texts that were selected from an array of word pools.

  • Guestbook Poetry In Progress

  • Guestbook Poetry Users can add in words, or adjust or do whatever they want.

It doesn't look the best even though the concept is really simple. I think I would have to let other people try it to see what are their responses.

Term One Table Presentation

  • A bad set up with bad camera angle too

We presented our experiments and works for class today. This was a chance to see everyone’s work in progress, receive feedback and see what others have done. Though the presentation was casual and informal, we had to pay more attention to the way our works are presented. I presented the p5.js experiments and a picture of my success attempt in connecting the dance pad.

  • Andreas Table Set up Example Use of acrylics to elevate displays

In hindsight, I didn’t prepare well enough for the table presentation at all. There were suggestions shown by Andreas, where he recommended using transparent acrylic to create a more professional look. Following the next presentation, I’d have to pay better attention to printed materials (maybe special papers printed print de creation), thinking about compositions such as different paper sizes, and negative spaces on the table, and better picture and video angles, like an overview shot, close-up, or pictures with interaction.

During the presentation itself, I could already start seeing changes in the words that are being formed. One feedback that Vionetta gave was to create a website out of this, so that I’m able to see the responses as it updates.

This term was relatively hard to juggle, as a bulk of my time was spent on working on an exhibition. I feel greatly disappointed that my making only truly started from Week 04 onwards, but even so, not much progress was made. I have to be more strategic, and put in extra time to catch up.
